I decided to study at UTS because practical nursing skills are taught in class, so there are more opportunities for us to practice. We have practice labs at UTS that we can attend and we get support from our lecturers and tutors. I like the location of UTS because it is right in the city, just a short walk from Central station – it’s quite convenient. We have clinical placements each semester to use our new skills, and we go to different facilities, so we gain experience in different places. There are a lot of pre-class online activities for nursing and compulsory online modules that prepare you for practical skills in the labs.
The most rewarding aspect of this course has been the support I have had from UTS. As a Nursing student, I have to make sure my immunisations are up-to-date. The Health Service on campus at UTS is convenient because I can make an appointment in between classes and get what immunisations I need before my clinical placement started.
My advice to future international students is to talk more and practice your English. Communication is really important in Australia, so have a go and don’t be shy or worried about making mistakes. Also, engage in volunteer work. It’s a nice opportunity to meet different people and practice your English. I would also recommend international students to complete the online work before attending class. Otherwise, especially, for nursing, you will find it difficult in class to understand what is being discussed.
