New book on metropolitan governance in Asia to be published

A new edited collection titled Metropolitan Governance in Asia and the Pacific Rim will be published by Springer in July 2018.

Co-edited by Bligh Grant, UTS, Cathy Yang Liu, Georgia State University and Lin Ye, Sun Yat-sen University, it explores seminal changes and major policy challenges in metropolitan governance in Asia and the Pacific Rim. 

It is framed by three over-arching narratives:

• The increased importance (economic, political and cultural) of the Asian region within strategic discussions of planetary urbanism;
• The challenges arising from the rapid pace of development (again, economic, political and cultural) and the endorsement of aggressive economic development in many of the polities under consideration, and:
• The increased salience of metropolitan and urban governance when set against national, local and supra-national arrangements.

The book includes chapters on housing in Chinese and Indonesian cities, metropolitan planning in Sydney, the informal sector in Pakistan’s cities of Lahore and Karachi and the ‘new suburban reality’ in China’s cities. Other chapters also examine smart cities as part of India’s metropolitan development and Jakarta’s challenges in the face of terrorism. It also maps a strategic future for the ‘Sino-Southeast Asian Necklace’, joining city regions in a new framing of political economy, which is rapidly becoming a reality.

The book is scheduled to be published by Springer in July 2018 and can be pre-ordered from its website.
