About the Speaker
Mark is the Secretary of the New South Wales Department of Education. He is responsible for more than 2,000 schools and around 49,000 teachers in the state.
Mark is a leader of digital transformations, cultural change, stakeholder management and engagement. He has held Governance and Executive roles in media, education and social welfare organisations including 10 years as Managing Director of ABC. He has written and spoken extensively on organisational responses to the impacts of change driven by technology; cultural, communications and media policy; soft power and public diplomacy; leadership and reform.
In June 2011, Mark was named an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to media and communications, and to the community through advisory and governance roles with a range of social justice and educational bodies.
Mark was a member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Industry Advisory Board from 2009-2016 and has built very strong relationships between UTS and the ABC through a wide range of industry internships for UTS students; co-hosting and broadcasting UTS events, seminars and forums; joint research projects and attending a myriad of UTS events and activities.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Diploma of Education, and a Master of Arts from the University of Sydney. He also holds a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University. He was awarded a Doctor of Letters from the University of Sydney and a Doctor of Business from the University of New South Wales.
