Resource Sharing in Kentish and Latrobe Councils
Kentish and Latrobe Councils in Tasmania have been collaborating and resource sharing successfully over several years. The councils have been able to demonstrate efficiencies of scope and scale and increased strategic capacity from resource sharing, thus creating leaner organisations, better service levels and lower rates, all the while achieving savings and retaining local decision making.
The Centre for Local Government (CLG) at the University of Technology Sydney's Institute of Public Policy and the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government worked with the Councils to review their resource sharing arrangements in 2016. CLG released a report in November 2016 that revealed conservative savings due to resource sharing of $768,000 across the two Councils in the 2015/16 financial year.
Following the release of the report, the councils have been working together to implement the report’s recommendation. They have several projects underway, which are detailed on La Trobe Council’s website.
