New jobs and journalism
Former CMT co-director Peter Fray and CMT senior lecturer Sacha Molitorisz worked with UTS Faculty of Engineering and IT (FEIT) PhD student Nik Dawson on a project looking at trends in journalism jobs.
With the help of FEIT associate professor Marian-Andrei Riziou, Nik used machine learning to analyse enormous data sets. This data, which included 8.2 million online job advertisements in Australia and New Zealand, revealed how market demand for journalists changed from 2012 to 2020.
Over that period, job advertisements for journalists declined, but surprisingly job advertisements seeking applicants with journalism skills increased. Further findings included worrying gender-related trends impacting women journalists.
The research findings were presented in a paper, 'Journalism Job Vacancies in Australia and New Zealand 2012-2019', delivered at the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia (JERAA) conference at the University of Sydney on 3-6 December 2019.
