Summary of research project
‘Statistical approaches to the evaluation of the impact of vaccination programs’
This project involves investigating how the application of different methodological approaches impacts on the results of population level vaccination program evaluations. My goal is to provide guidelines for robust statistical methods that address estimation of the impact of vaccination programs on burden of disease; as well as an outline on methods to estimate the proportion of non-specific disease that is vaccine preventable. My research will benefit other researchers in the area who are looking for guidelines or assistance on which statistical methods are appropriate in which circumstances and why.
My experience as a student at the Faculty of Health at UTS
It was really important for me to work with the supervisor best suited to my research project. I was first in contact with Professor Andrew Hayen because he is an experienced Biostatistician working across many public heath projects. I wanted my project to be method based. He put me in contact with Associate Professor Anthony Newall, who has been working in the area of infectious diseases for a number of years, an area that I was also keen to explore further. Anthony Newall became my other supervisor.
I have loved studying at the Faculty of Health because of the great facilities and resources provided. It has been really useful to be supplied with a laptop because it has made it much easier for me to take my current research to meetings and to move easily within the Faculty of Health’s hot desk Higher Degree Research Space. This is a great place for both independent study and collaborative work with other research students.
