What is STEAMpunk Girls?
STEAMpunk Girls is a unique interdisciplinary educational program working at the intersection of high schools, industry and the university. The program aims to empower young women aged 12 to 16 to be equipped for the future workforce by fostering the growth of an entrepreneurial mindset, and supporting young people to develop their transversal and STEAM skills including critical and innovative thinking, problem-solving, and numeracy and literacy skills.
The STEAMpunk Girls program works with innovative, enthusiastic teachers to deliver a core program which exposes young women to the STEAM fields, female role models, new ways of thinking, and emerging tech. Participants apply their skills and experiences to developing a project in response to a problem in their local community. Utilising project-based learning, STEAMpunk Girls supports the participants to apply these experiences and a STEAM mindset to developing a project in response to a problem in their local community.
Our STEAMpunk Girls pilot saw 64 female high school students from across Sydney develop projects responding to problems in their community.

STEM to STEAM
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) extends the concept of STEM, to recognise and incorporate the values and concepts from the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. UTS has extended this further, incorporating entrepreneurial processes as part of the STEAM mindset to help position young women to solve problems in their local communities.
Why is there a need for initiatives like STEAMpunk Girls?
Since the conception of the program, STEAMpunk Girls has set out to explore how social, political, technological and economic shifts will impact the future work landscape. Through our research and co-design workshops we have identified the following key trends that will impact the future of work, industry and emerging practice.
