I chose Postgraduate Journalism at UTS because I felt my career would benefit from pursuing a higher level of education.
There’s no question studying a postgraduate course has made me a better writer. I learned how to make more concise points, how to keep stories flowing more effectively and became experienced in a variety of digital media tools, such as Final Cut, Pro Tools and InDesign.
I enjoyed the variety of fields of study, the guidance from my tutors and the connections that completing this degree provided me with.
My journey since graduation
Since graduating I have undertaken multiple roles at The Sydney Morning Herald, across the News, Sport and Entertainment departments. I’ve interviewed celebrities, covered major sporting events and got invaluable experience working in the newsroom during major events like the Federal Election and State of Origin.
Every day is different: depending on what department I’m working in, I could be covering live sport, chasing breaking news or producing and indexing stories for the website and tablet apps.
My advice to aspiring journalists
Work hard in your course, and be willing to put your hand up for any internship that comes your way, but at the same time, make sure not to be taken for granted.
