Corrosion repairs continue around campus
December 2015
A major project to repair corroded metalwork on the Broadway/Harris St corner of the City campus is making steady progress, despite unfavourable weather that has delayed the project’s completion.
This complex project requires low humidity. However, last month’s rain followed by a number of warm days in early December means that, while work in some areas will be completed this year, other repairs are likely to continue into 2016.
Scaffolding is going up in preparation for repairs to the Building 3 turret.

- Harris St footbridge – While the weatherproof membrane and walking surface are now mostly in place, painting and other work is likely to continue on the footbridge until Christmas. The bridge is expected to be accessible during the day but please be aware that the bridge may be closed at night in connection with the works to the Building 6 façade.
- Building 6 – Minor night works continue to the Harris St façade of Building 6, although access to and from the building is not affected. In the courtyards, the scaffold towers remain in place to provide access to the roof of Building 6, where repair works have been more extensive than anticipated. Those using or visiting the surrounding buildings are likely to continue experiencing some impact from the noise of small tools, such as sanders. We appreciate your patience until this work is completed, hopefully by Christmas.
- Building 3 turret and awnings – Scaffolding erection is underway at the corner of Broadway and Harris St ready for repair work to the Building 3 turret. This is likely to continue until late January. While work is underway, the level 5 corner office below the turret is being used as a work site and is accessible only by contractors. At street level, the awning over 2SER on Broadway is expected to be complete by Christmas, although work on other awnings on this corner cannot conclude until repairs to the turret have been carried out and the scaffolding removed in January.
Despite every attempt to minimise inconvenience to staff and students, the challenges of this weather-sensitive project have resulted in delays and more disruption than hoped. Please continue to bear with us during this final stage – completion isn’t too far away.
Please email John Darin with any questions regarding the project or the contractor.
