Hang Wang
Bachelor of Business (Honours)
There is lots of support for international students.
What degree/s have you earned?
I studied a Diploma of Business at UTS College first, and after UTS College I studied in the Bachelor of Business for an extended finance major and a sub-major in economics.
Why did you choose those majors?
I like Finance, and my aim is to do a PhD, so I’m more focused on the theoretical things. Economics and finance are closely related. Many models in finance are actually from economics. If you understand the basics in economics you better understand finance.
How has your time at UTS improved your skills?
There are many workshops at UTS in writing and speaking. They help you with your assignments, grammar and IELTS tests. There are also lots of workshops in the library, and UTS always sends emails for international internship opportunities. There is lots of support for international students.
What is the best or most useful thing you have learned in your degree?
The coursework here is closely related to the industry. The assignments connect to the real world – it’s not like you’re just reading a textbook and doing an exam. You learn skills to solve real problems. In Corporate Finance: Theory and Practice we analysed a real company and calculated its value. In Investment Analysis we learned how to construct a portfolio. So the training here is very good. The high quality of training is a challenge, and it means that after you graduate, you can take on any challenge.
Has anyone in particular at UTS had a significant influence on your studies, such as a lecturer or tutor?
Professor Susan Thorp is very kind. I ask her questions because of language problems I don’t understand sometimes; but she is very nice and she will help you and build your confidence, especially for international students. Also my honours supervisor Associate Professor Jianxin Wang – he has taught me a lot in how to do good research.
What sort of work do you hope to be doing after you graduate?
My goal now is to have my research in a high quality publication after my PhD. I’d like to be an academic, and maybe I’ll come back to UTS to be a lecturer.
What is your advice for someone who is looking at studying Business at UTS?
Do honours – it’s a totally different experience from an undergraduate degree and you develop very different skills.
