Green fingers at work in the arcade
October 2014
In the Jones St arcade – between the concrete, steel and glass of Buildings 10 and 11 – an 11m high living wall of lush greenery is taking shape.
Work began on the green wall in mid-September with the installation of a steel and ply-sheet structure to the wall of Building 10. This forms the backbone of the green wall. An X-frame will be attached to this structure to carry the planter boxes.
Around 16 different species of plants will form the green wall, including three philodendrons, orange-flowering clivia and trailing peperomia. Each was recommended by landscaping contractor Junglefy because it is a tried-and-trusted performer on green walls, will complement the other plants and provide the right amount of coverage.
With its own built-in irrigation system, connected to the recycled water supply in Building 11, the green wall will take care of its own watering needs after completion at the end of October 2014.
The steel and ply frame for the green wall is under construction.
The green wall is our second new green space in recent weeks, following the laying of the Alumni Green lawn across the road.
Please exercise care if walking in the vicinity of the arcade while work to the green wall is underway.
Lifts back online
Inside Building 10, lifts 1 and 2 in the Jones St lobby, have commenced service, along with lift 8 on Wattle St.
With four out of six new lifts now operational from Jones St, you should notice a significant improvement in service.
Lifts 3 and 4 are currently undergoing upgrades, with work due to be complete in early December. Following this, the final lift to be upgraded (lift 10 on Wattle St) will go off line, with work being completed by early March 2015.
Please email Ranjan Chandrasena with any questions or concerns regarding lift construction or the contractor.
Report lift malfunctions to Building Services on x7476 or x7477.
On the move
Next year, Building 10 will wave goodbye to the Human Resources Unit and Financial Services Unit, and welcome the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) and Faculty of Health (FoH) when the Kuring-gai Campus closes in December 2015.
- Concept design is well advanced for the FASS and FoH spaces, which will include teaching laboratories and classrooms as well as staff accommodation.
- Consultant procurement is 95% complete and an invitation for expressions of interest from head building contractors will be issued before Christmas 2014.
