I find that UTS’s collaborative approach is mirrored in the workplace.
"One thing that attracted me to UTS was the convenient location. It's easily accessible by public transport and it's in the centre of the city. It’s the perfect place to be studying and getting to know Sydney better. I also felt that being in the city would bring me closer to work opportunities, with many top-tier law firms located in the city.
What I enjoy most at UTS is the environment, the people are really friendly. My colleagues and I would collaborate and study together in the postgraduate lounge. That really helped because everyone has a different understanding of the content and one person might miss something so you can discuss it together. When you’ve got a large group of friends that are all willing to help each other, it’s a lot easier to get through some of the difficult moments of a law degree.
I find that UTS’s collaborative approach is mirrored in the workplace. With the larger firms, the cases are large and it is usually a group of solicitors, a group of barristers and a group of clerks who all have to work together.
UTS has lots of opportunities to volunteer like the Brennan Justice and Leadership Program and Legal Assistant Commissions, which is great. The Brennan program is a social justice and leadership program where you attend a few lectures and do 130 hours of volunteer work. It could be assisting a legal set-out at a legal centre or working at a law firm. You can help out with homeless shelters or any organisation with a nexus to social justice.
For my volunteer hours I worked at Anglicare. I was just talking to people and trying to see how I could help them with their legal issues. That was quite rewarding. I got an opportunity to draft wills for people, and it helped me learn how to draft wills quickly. There's a whole range of things that you can do. At the end of the day when you do something like that, it just feels so great. People will also look at your volunteer experience on your resume, so every opportunity you take is getting you one step closer to where you want to be with your degree.”
