I grew to discover what options were out there.
I chose to study it at UTS because of the International Studies program and the compulsory opportunity to study abroad. After studying journalism at UTS, I decided that this is the direction I want to pursue in my career. In the International Studies degree, I have learnt French, improved my language skills during my in-country study and have experienced an amazing year abroad, meeting many amazing people. I have also made some really wonderful, like-minded friends during my times at UTS.
I have enjoyed the practical aspect of my communications degree. I grew to discover what options were out there and the basics of what the journalism industry requires in this day and age. In the journalism major the assignments really help you understand what you are good at. I also think it’s important to look for work opportunities outside of uni. I did a lot of online writing for various websites and am quite involved with two community radio stations.
For international studies students, know that a year abroad is hard, but so rewarding. My in-country study was an amazing year. I think it has given me a really international way of thinking, I can see where Australia fits in with the world and it has made me think outwards. Knowing another language has also been really helpful for my travels and it makes you think in really different ways. Learning French was sometimes frustrating but I now really enjoy the results — conversing with people in another language!
