I'm a last minute person, but that changed when I realised any success or failure is entirely on me
I studied Horticulture at TAFE straight out of high school, but soon realised I enjoyed gardening and landscaping for fun as opposed to doing it as a career. I took 18 months off to travel and think about what other fields I could explore.
My decision to change direction and study nursing at UTS came after I had to be taken to hospital in the back of an ambulance. I remember thinking, ‘Maybe I could become a paramedic?' I always liked hospitals; I’ve always been accident-prone and spent much time in and out of them! My marks from high school were good enough to get into nursing, but I still submitted a personal statement to strengthen my application – I’d recommend everyone does this.
The transition from TAFE to university was initially pretty tough. I remember having a bit of a freak-out about five weeks into my first semester when I thought of all the work I had due in and how much time I had to do it. But once I started getting my first marks back I felt a lot better and knew what to expect.
I'm now in the final year of my three-year full-time degree and loving it. We get to spend loads of time in the hospital wards with the patients and put what we learn in the classroom into practice. I was always a last minute person but that totally changed, partly because coming to uni was 100 per cent my decision so any success – or failure – is entirely on me. I want to learn as much as I can while I’m here.
