Studying such a variety of disciplines at UTS really helped me to discover what I was passionate...
What degree/s have you earned?
I completed a Bachelor of Business with Honours in Marketing. I majored in accounting with sub-majors in marketing and finance.
Why did you choose UTS?
I chose UTS because the business degree was far more practical than the degrees offered at other universities. Throughout my degree I had excellent lecturers and tutors and several of my subjects required me to devise solutions to real world problems, which I found relevant and interesting.
What was the highlight of the past few years?
I found my honours year to be the highlight of my UTS experience. Undertaking a research project with the incredible support of my supervisors, Paul Wang and David Waller, taught me so much about academic writing, marketing research and data analysis, while allowing me to undertake an in-depth exploration into a subject matter of my choosing. I gained an exceptional amount in my Honours year, both academically and personally, and these skills will be invaluable throughout my career.
How have your studies at UTS helped you in finding / preparing for a career path?
Studying such a variety of disciplines at UTS really helped me to discover what I was passionate about and which areas I wanted to pursue in my career. Several of the subjects that I studied involved devising solutions to real world problems, for example devising a marketing campaign for Windows 8. This experience helped me to make an informed decision to pursue a career in marketing. Additionally, UTS encourages getting practical experience through internships and work experience. I had several internships while I was studying which also helped me to prepare for a career path.
What is the most useful thing you have learned from your degree so far?
From my undergraduate degree I learned an incredible amount from each of my majors and sub-majors. Through my accounting and finance majors, I developed an array of skills which are incredibly useful in understanding financial systems and business accounting. My marketing sub-major taught me a lot about a variety of forms of marketing, and challenged me by having to devise solutions to a variety of marketing problems. I learned so much from my Honours year, including an in-depth understanding of marketing research, academic writing and the television industry in Australia (the topic of my thesis). My supervisors were incredibly helpful and supportive, which allowed me to grow and learn throughout the process.
