What led you to choose UTS:Law for your studies? The practicality of UTS Law appealed to me. Students and staff seemed more approachable and down to earth than those I encountered at the bigger, more ‘prestigious’ law schools. I wanted to study in an environment that wasn’t driven just by academic results, but instead offered a variety of learning experiences.
How do you balance study and work commitments? I usually write out a list of things I want to achieve – both in terms of uni work and social occasions/relaxation. This enables me to factor in sufficient time for both.
How have/will your studies at UTS contribute to your career? How have they informed the way you work? I feel I have developed a practical approach to problem solving. In addition to legal knowledge, this will be an important framework to have in my career. I can approach problems pragmatically and conduct research effectively.
More importantly, however, is the strong sense of social justice I have been imbued with through studying law at UTS. Brennan Program events keep UTS Law students in touch with current affairs and human rights issues throughout the world. We are thus encouraged to retain our idealism and to have a positive impact on the legal profession.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your degree? Why? The fact that I am constantly proving myself wrong has been the most rewarding aspect of my degree. My interest has often been piqued by areas of the law that, initially, I thought would be boring. The law has something of a reputation for being content-heavy and dry. But the law is also multifaceted and dynamic. It challenges and surprises, and encourages its students to think deeply about (and question) the way it shapes our lives.
What would your advice be for someone who is looking at studying Law at UTS? Throw yourself in: try everything and don’t let any preconceptions about law hold you back. Take advantage of any opportunity offered to you. UTS Law certainly has a lot to offer its students, both in terms of study and recreational activities.
