Bringing generations of beginner teachers together to learn the age-old craft of teaching.

A dynamic group of students from the Future Teachers Club (FTC) and teachers, Sheridan Georgiou and Rebecca Grassy, at Macquarie Fields High School visited teacher education tutorials in the Master of Teaching in Secondary Education course.

The FTC is a highly popular extra-curricular club that is delivered by teachers for public secondary students interested in pursuing a career in teaching.

Making connections

Robust collaborations between Macquarie Fields High School and UTS School of International Studies and Education has taken beginner teacher professional learning to another level. UTS and FTC students engaged in microteaching, practising the art of delivering an engaging lesson and providing rich feedback to support each other’s growth.

Seeing high school students demonstrate the complex skills of teaching in front of university peers was inspirational. UTS students felt humbled by how the desire to educate future generations could form at such a young age. They had much to learn from their high school student peers.

“I was amazed to see how much my teaching improved through the day,” said one Future Teachers Club student.

FTC students went toe to toe with UTS students, confidently leading class discussions and providing clear explanations on effective teaching skills to share their professional knowledge.

The UTS students were so kind. They listened to us and respected our opinion. I felt like I was one of them.

The magic of university and school partners working together in the teacher education space is difficult to measure. Allowing high school students to learn and teach alongside their university peers gives them an invaluable opportunity to step up to the next level of professionalism. Enabling teacher education students to interact with school students also generates equally rich and authentic learning experiences.

We look forward to creating many such opportunities in the future so the path into the teaching profession is seamless and that beginner teachers are well-prepared for what is an amazing and worthwhile career!
