UTS fast facts

14 December 2021

Thinking of starting at UTS? Here are 10 fast facts you might not have known about us!

Hello UTS Home

Number 1 numeric value

UTS is Australia’s No.1 young uni*

You can’t argue with the facts, people.  UTS is now the world’s ninth ranked university established under 50 years ago, and first in Australia in the *THE Young University Rankings. Bonkers!

Number 2 numeric value

The significance behind the UTS Tower

The prominent UTS Tower landmark is distinctively recognisable from its iconic presence amongst a sea of apartments and recently built skyscrapers. In the heart of Broadway, the 120 metre tall building has a confronting façade (it was even voted Sydney’s ugliest building in 2006) but while it may stick out like a sore thumb, it has the bones and foundations that accommodates teachers, students, graduations and research.

Number 3 numeric value

UTS is home to 10,000 native bees

Supporting pollination across the neighbourhood, bees are completely stingless - so leave them bee! The beehive can be located on the north-facing Library terrace, sitting among the planter beds. Pretty cute, if you ask bee! Okay fine, we’ll stop with the puns.

Number 4 numeric value

Hugh Jackman studied at UTS

Yep, that’s right - you’re studying amongst some famous alumni. He studied a Bachelor of Communication back in 1991; studying at UTS is the ultimate power move to some top tier bragging rights.

Number 5 numeric value

UTS has 130+ clubs and societies

Where like-minded students meet and socialise, university isn’t only just for study - it’s a community! Make the best years out of uni life in the Astronomy Society, Australian Wall Street, Dog Society (I am not making this up) and Get Gigged! Suss out our clubs and societies.

Number 6 numeric value

The UTS buildings have some hilarious nicknames

Choose your fighter:

  • Building 1 = The Jenga Building
  • Building 2 = The Giant Apple Store, The Spaceship or a classic… The Building Next To The Tower
  • Building 5 = The Old Library Building
  • Building 8 = The Crumpled Paper Bag
  • Building 11 = The Cheesegrater
Number 7 numeric value

UTS ranks #62 in the world for graduate employability

And in Australia, we’re ranked 5th for graduate employability according to the 2022 edition of the QS World University Rankings - an awesomely good ranking for a promising career!

Number 8 numeric value

Nelson Mandela was awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Laws by UTS in 2000

Yep, a HonLLD was awarded to the late Nelson Mandela for his efforts in upholding human rights in his country. Wholesome.

Number 9 numeric value

The UTS Tower was actually planned to be seven buildings

The mid-1960’s design featured seven buildings to create a multitude of spaces for students but with over 20 buildings and 240 partner universities in over 40 countries, UTS has definitely covered extensive ground.

Number 10 numeric value

There is greenery everywhere on campus, and we mean everywhere

The buildings are in the centre of Sydney but sustainability and practicality has not been forgotten about. From study breaks, catching some sun or somewhere to eat lunch, enjoy the oasis and fresh O2 in UTS Central, the Library Terrace (panoramic views) and the Rooftop Garden. UTS goes beyond the aesthetic - the Vicki Sara Building has been awarded a 6 Star Green Star Design; the building has been constructed with material made up of 75% recycled glass. Sustainable, savvy and intelligent with design - nothing like it.
