Institute for Sustainable Futures

ISF is an independent research institute within the University of Technology Sydney. We conduct transdisciplinary, project-based research in line with our vision of creating positive change towards sustainable futures. Browse a selection of our projects below.

Building climate-resilient WASH

Climate change is threatening the sustainability of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in many countries. UTS’s Institute for Sustainable Futures is working on series of practical projects to meet the challenge head-on.

Analysis of increasing water efficiency standards

In recognition of the importance of minimum standards in water efficiency and their regular review, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) recently commissioned ISF to investigate the costs and benefits of increasing water efficiency standards in homes in Victoria via a range of regulatory mechanisms.

The true cost of cardboard cartons

ISF stacked up costs embedded in the supply chain to find out which is the cheaper option: single-use cardboard boxes, or reusable plastic crates.

Exploring GESI Change qualKit

ISF helped develop an online resource to help the WASH sector track their progress in figuring gender and inclusion into their work.

Offshore wind in Australia

In a collaboration between research centres and trade unions, ISF found that Australia has the perfect conditions to support a thriving offshore wind industry.
