Professor Jack Beetson’s story, from a challenging start to global recognition as a leader, is a testament to the transformative power of education and advocacy.
A proud Ngemba man from Western NSW, Professor Beetson has dedicated his life to advancing Aboriginal rights, fostering community development and enhancing literacy among First Nations adults through innovative community-led initiatives.
His work includes local grassroots programs and significant contributions on international platforms, advocating for Indigenous empowerment.

Literacy for Life Foundation
Beetson’s belief in improving the literacy rate drove him to found the Literacy for Life Foundation (LLF) in 2013. The Aboriginal-run charity is dedicated to bringing literacy to Indigenous communities.
Thanks to Beetson and his team, the LFLF’s education program, which is Indigenous community-led, has already graduated 300 students, over 60 per cent of whom are women. His efforts underscore adult education's critical role in achieving community-wide changes.
Honours and recognition
Beetson’s influence extends well beyond Australia. In 1997, he represented the country at UNESCO’s CONFINTEA V Conference in Hamburg, contributing to the world’s first Indigenous adult education framework. He also played a role in drafting the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
For his tireless work, he received the United Nations Unsung Hero Award in 2001 for civilizations and was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame in 2019.

The 2022 UTS Alumni Awards celebrated Beetson’s lifelong dedication to Aboriginal rights and literacy. He was honoured with the Faculty of Arts Social Sciences award and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. “Every recognition is a reminder of our community’s progress and the work still ahead.”
