Learn how Hannah Zhangh’s choice to major in accounting and sub-major in economics at UTS provided her with a robust blend of theoretical and practical experience, leading to a successful San Francisco-based career.
When Hannah chose to major in accounting and sub-major in economics at UTS, she believed that accounting would provide a solid grounding for any career path. Her interest in economics, sparked during high school, led her to explore its impact on financial institutions, smaller businesses, and consumers.
“I have always believed that accounting is truly the language of business and would give me a solid grounding in whatever area I entered into.”
Hannah’s interest in commerce/business led her to apply for the UTS Bachelor of Accounting co-operative program. She was drawn to UTS for its great opportunities, interactive and hands-on degree programs, and excellent extra-curricular activities such as ACES UTS Entrepreneurial Society and UTS Women in Business.
A blend of theory and practice
UTS offers an interactive degree that draws upon concepts commonly used in accounting, finance, and economic careers. Subjects like Business Analysis and Corporate Finance have helped Hannah grasp concepts that are extremely applicable in any business profession.
Paired with her degree, these theoretical and practical concepts have given her deeper insights into different areas of accounting and effective task management throughout a college semester.
Hannah's work experience included a six-month stint at American Express in the corporate controllership team and another six months at KordaMentha in the restructuring team. These vastly different experiences provided her with a holistic understanding of the business environment and the work ethic required. Additionally, she worked part-time at Social Impact Hub for ten months and completed a summer internship at McGrathNicol.
Despite being spontaneous by nature, Hannah managed her time effectively during periods where she worked full-time and studied part-time. She maintained a to-do list covering all tasks for the week, which helped her manage her expectations and balance her responsibilities.
When you come to university, remember that it’s not just a place to study, get good marks and leave. Put yourself out there and get involved on campus, join societies and take advantage of the sponsor events.
Embracing university life
Hannah’s time at UTS was enriched by the variety of extracurricular activities offered. She encourages students to get involved on campus, join societies, and take advantage of sponsored events held by the university and student societies. This involvement helps develop current skills, gain new ones, and positions students for summer internships and graduate jobs.
