BUILD (Beyond UTS International Leadership Development) is an extra-curricular global leadership program with a mission to develop self-aware, informed and active global citizens and leaders to deliver positive social impact in the world.

The program provides you with an opportunity to learn about global issues from an Australian perspective, as well as, share your unique perspectives as international students. This opportunity for mutual peer learning is a valued aspect of the BUILD program.

The main program is designed to be completed over the duration of a full degree (usually 2-5 years). The BUILD Study Abroad and Exchange Certificate is an abridged version of the main program, allowing inbound study abroad and exchange students to complete the program over one session of study.

How does the certificate work?

To complete the Study Abroad and Exchange BUILD Certificate, you need to participate in a range of activities and experiences that earn a total of 40 points; 20 points from core activities and 20 points from elective activities.

BUILD elective events and activities include events organised by BUILD such as speaker sessions and activities such as the Indigenous Cultural Awareness Courses. BUILD elective events also include endorsed online courses covering topics that support your leadership development and broaden your awareness and understanding as a global citizen. You can choose from these seminars according to your interests.

Once you have completed 40 points (minimum 20 core and 20 elective points), you will have the opportunity to reflect on your development and what you have achieved through BUILD in your end of program reflection.

On completion, you will receive a digital certificate signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) and be invited to attend the Completion Celebration.

How can I benefit from joining BUILD?

Through BUILD, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Broaden your global mindset
  • Learn about global issues from an Australian context
  • Learn to lead
  • Forge global connections
  • Network across faculties
  • Add value to your career employability

When does the program run?

BUILD events may run year round, however, most events are focused during Autumn and Spring sessions.

To ensure you have time to finish your BUILD Study Abroad and Exchange Certificate, we recommend you join during Orientation or the first two weeks of session if you intend to complete by the end of your session of study. You are also welcome to attend individual events even if you are not sure you will be able to complete the full certificate requirements. Every event is an opportunity to learn and contribute even if you are not working towards your completion certificate.
