Understanding the Diploma in IT Professional Practice

In order to make the most of your internship and develop the skills and experience of interest to you, it is important that you understand the structure and purpose of the Diploma in IT Professional Practice (DipITProfPrac).

When can I do the internship?

You can commence your internship once you have completed 72 credit points, including the preparatory subject 31016 Career Management for IT Professionals.

What does the internship involve?

There are four stages to the internship:

1. Preparation

You enrol in the preparatory subject 31016 Career Management for IT Professionals, where you will learn about the culture of the IT workplace, identify work opportunities, learn to effectively market yourself to appropriate employers, and develop the professional skills and behaviours sought by employers.

2. Finding a position

You identify a position in an organisation with professional functions and activities relevant to your chosen major. Internship opportunities are registered by the FEIT Engagement Team on CareerHub, or you may approach an appropriate organisation yourself. Once you pass the resume deliverable stage of your preparatory subject, you will automatically be given access to view relevant internships on CareerHub that meet your course requirements. Once you have found a position, you then register your internship on CareerHub, after which you will automatically be enrolled in the relevant industry experience subjects. Please note: You cannot self-enrol in these subjects:

First session of your internship:

  • 41061 IT Professional Experience 1
  • 41062 IT Professional Experience 2
  • 41071 Work Integrated Learning 1
  • 41072 Work Integrated Learning 2

Second session of your internship:

  • 41063 IT Professional Experience 3
  • 41064 IT Professional Experience 4
  • 41073 Work Integrated Learning 3
  • 41074 Work Integrated Learning 4

3. Internship

You undertake a 9-month full-time or equivalent part-time internship in your chosen organisation.

4. Reflect and review

During your internship, you enrol in 41065 IT Experience Reflection which provides you with an opportunity to report and reflect on your learning during your internship, as well as having an opportunity to learn from the experiences of other students.
