Meet Sophie, 2022 Merit Scholarship for Women recipient.
Can you tell us about your experience as a RCC scholarship recipient?
The $10,000 annual support significantly helps with my university fees, and as a cadet, I also earn a salary. In saying this, I think the biggest benefit being a recipient has been the Cadetship – these life skills cannot be taught elsewhere.
I genuinely love my job – it doesn’t feel like work. RCC’s culture is driven from the top down – people are approachable and proactively share their knowledge and experience with us.
Tell us about your experience as an RCC scholarship recipient.
The networking and learning opportunities are invaluable. This ‘real-world,’ on-site experience has helped me gain a better understanding of the industry; picking up subtle cues and ways-of-working from my team, clients, and subcontractors that you don’t get in a classroom.
I’m so appreciative of my mentors on each project – they continue to inspire and encourage me, and their support is truly invaluable!
My mentor, Samantha Kuiper, General Manager – Design and Innovation, has been incredible. She’s encouraged me to elevate my work, reach new heights and take advantage of every opportunity.
I now have first-hand experience with the intricate coordination that goes into bringing buildings to life – there is a planned purpose behind every detail, every decision…no matter how small.
You have decided to pursue the design elective – what are some of your key learnings?
RCC’s Cadet Program is structured through four core rotations; Site Engineering, Site Supervision, Contracts Administration and Values/Behaviours. We then choose electives, one of which is design.
I have a strong interest in design coordination; design is intrinsically linked with all facets of construction, and it is the basis of delivering buildings. Successful design coordination relies on communication and problem-solving between the project team and consultants including architects. My problem-solving skills have sharpened across project rotations, and I am now more confident and able to offer my professional opinion.
What advice would you give to students looking to enter this industry or thinking about applying for the 2024 program?
Go for it - if you are passionate about something, everything else falls into place. The construction industry is unreal.
There are so many facets to Construction Management. You learn about the entire building process, and RCC delivers across such diverse sectors that no two projects are the same.
My future goal is to become a Site Engineer with RCC. This role closely aligns with the construction process – being on-site, addressing challenges in real time, and collaborating with consultants. Putting on my boots, hard hat, and hi-vis gear provides an exhilarating experience that I find truly rewarding.

Meet Elise, 2022 Merit Scholarship for Women recipient
Can you tell us about your experience as a RCC scholarship recipient?
While the financial assistance is great, it’s not just about the money – the real highlight is the opportunity to work at RCC, a leading contractor with an industry-leading cadet program.
Through the scholarship, I’ve been exposed to industry events that aren’t typical for most students, such as the NAWIC 2022/23 Awards and Property Council of Australia events. This exposure adds a unique dimension to my experience.
How have you found the RCC Cadetship?
My experience has been incredible – the program will ensure I’m rotated through every part of the business, from tendering to delivery, commissioning and post-delivery.
My rotation began in Head Office, where I was an Estimating Cadet for 8 months. Here, I learnt surveying, estimating and the tendering process. Tony Irving, Estimating Manager, was my mentor and supervisor throughout – his work ethic and leadership style were inspirational, and I strive to encapsulate them when collaborating with my team and external stakeholders.
Now, I’m working on one of RCC’s Major Projects - its scale and complexity is exciting. I work with such a supportive team and am surrounded by experts who happily involve me - I’m gaining insight into design, decision-making processes and construction methodologies.
As part of the Cadet Advisory Team (a mini PCG) we’re trusted to assist and enhance the delivery of the Cadet Program. It’s all about collaboration. Samantha Kuiper, General Manager – Design and Innovation, has been an incredible role model and inspiration – she's innovative and proactive in everything she does.
I was introduced to the construction and property sector by my parents, who are both in the industry. When my father and I pass by an old project of his, he speaks so passionately about it – it’s like a small part of him is embedded in the build. I hope to become a Project Director in Major Projects and look forward to one day feeling that same sense of pride myself.
You’re currently completing the Site Engineering rotation – what are some of your key learnings?
Site Engineers are the conduit between design and what happens on-site. I’m working on a structure package, which consists of the coordination of structural design and methodologies.
Working with subcontractors, consultants and both our design and site teams, I help develop the programme, design and building methodologies ahead of time to ensure no delays come execution. There’s a big focus on safety, quality assurance and quality management.
What advice would you give to students looking to enter this industry or thinking about applying for the 2024 program?
“All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them,” - Walt Disney
I grew up with this quote, and to me it means that you’ll never know if you don’t try. This is my biggest piece of advice to anyone wanting to apply for the scholarship. RCC’s warm culture and company values will mean you’re supported from the moment you join the team.
If you’ve already started your career, don’t be afraid to ask questions. In my experience, most people are happy to give advice and help. We are all constantly learning and growing. Be a sponge and absorb as much as you can, because no two days are the same.
