Work is changing. Disruption and innovation will create new roles and transform old ones. UTS is embracing a culture of entrepreneurship to ensure its graduates have the skills to succeed in the future workforce.
Fostering entrepreneurship

As the work landscape continues to change, startups are predicted to be a leading driver of growth in the jobs market.
Students already understand this reality, with our internal surveys revealing more than 40 per cent of our students want to create their own jobs or start their own companies.
UTS is well positioned – physically and academically – to help its students achieve this goal.
The university will be at the centre of a planned Silicon Valley-style hub, stretching from the edge of Sydney’s CBD to Camperdown, five kilometres to the west. The innovation precinct is positioned to take advantage of UTS’s world-class technology and resources – such as the new ProtoSpace – and its globally connected academics.
This hub complements UTS’s ambition to provide more than 50 per cent of students with entrepreneurial experiences and support, including bootcamps and startup weekends and industry opportunities including internships.
“The old style of thinking about what university is has changed quite a lot,” she says. “There is a lot at university now to help support you through an entrepreneurial journey. Subjects are more relevant and commercially focused.”
The community at UTS is already growing through UTS Startups, which provides access to co-working spaces, mentoring and a range of professional services.
Business School master's student Vanouhi Nazarian founded her startup, Kindershare, with the support of UTS Startups.
Nazarian says the emphasis on developing entrepreneurial skills provided a fertile ground for her budding idea.
“The old style of thinking about what university is has changed quite a lot,” she says. “There is a lot at university now to help support you through an entrepreneurial journey. Subjects are more relevant and commercially focused.”

Zherish Opperman, a business owner and data scientist in UTS’s Faculty of Engineering and IT, agrees and believes the focus at UTS on engaging academics with industry is key to delivering more effective teaching and learning.
“It’s helped me to help the next generation of entrepreneurs, to get them to think outside the box,” she says. “I love that I can make a difference here, among the next generation.”
