There are several components to the Back on Track Program run by HELPS and the Counselling Service of the Student Services.

Online Reflection Exercise

You need to reflect on the factors that contributed to your unsatisfactory academic performance and led to your caution status. You can do this by completing the Reflection exercise, and developing strategies to assist you to learn to better manage yourself.

Once you have completed the Reflection Exercise go and select the Back on track sessions that best suit your identified areas of need.

Before you meet with your Academic Adviser you need to think about what happened to lead you to being placed on Academic Caution. You also need to have given some thought to what you intend to do this semester to get your university studies back on track and improve your results. Use your Record of Academic Advice form to record this information (that was enclosed with your Notice of Academic Caution).

Back on Track Workshops

The Back on Track sessions are made up of a series of 4 separate workshops designed to assist students to improve their academic performance, or to plan how to address issues that may have prevented them from progressing satisfactorily.

To meet your academic caution obligation, it is compulsory to attend at least one of these workshops, although you can attend more than one.

  • Studying more effectively
This workshop looks at evidence-based strategies for learning more effectively. We’ll discuss methods of studying that best match how our brains have developed to learn new things.
  • New ways to tackle old problems: stress, anxiety, depression and procrastination
This workshop is offered by Counselling, and discusses effective strategies for dealing with some of the most common emotional issues that prevent students from achieving their best.
  • Writing better assignments
This workshop looks at some simple yet effective strategies for better planning your assignment, and meeting your lecturers’ expectations regarding style, structure and development of ideas.
  • Preparing effectively for exams
This workshop gives you some evidence-based tips to improve your ability to remember, understand and recall information so that you can use it effectively in your exams. It also discusses effective ways of approaching different types of exam questions.

Please register through the Schedule of sessions for whichever workshops you think will be of most use to you.

Individual consultation sessions and additional skills workshops

In addition, you can choose to attend individual consultation sessions and academic skills workshops at HELPS to improve your study skills, and/or counselling sessions at the Counselling Service to discuss psychological, personal or family issues.
