Volunteers are involved in everything done at the farm. They plant seeds in the nursery, nurture all crops, and collect the harvest donated to local food charities. Last year 615 kg of food was harvested for distribution.
Why does Sydney City Farm grow food in the city? By growing food on this former landfill site in the heart of Sydney they are reducing the transport distance of fresh food, providing urban residents with food growing experience and raising awareness of organic growing principles.
Sydney City Farm loves working with nature at the farm. They use diverse habitat plantings to attract pollinators and beneficial wildlife. They focus on growing healthy, disease-resistant crops suited to the local climate, maintaining soil fertility and using natural techniques to manage pests.
Sydney City Farm seeks out heirloom vegetables with a diverse genetic heritage so they can purposefully select seeds from plants which perform well at the farm. Over time the seeds collected this way are better adapted to thrive in local conditions. It is relatively easy to process and store seeds- people have been doing this for millennia!
Intended Outcome: Learn about urban agriculture and sustainability and how this helps to create sustainable cities, communities and a urban biodiversity.
