Refugee Camp in My Neighbourhood Fieldtrip
The Refugee Camp in my Neighbourhood Project is a simulated refugee journey which aims to raise awareness about human rights and celebrate the contributions refugees make in our local community. This is an in-person field trip organised by UTS BUILD.
This event is a field trip - limited spots (30) available. A wait list will be implemented if spots fill. WARNING: Some content experienced during this tour may be triggering or upsetting.
The Refugee Camp in my Neighbourhood Project is a simulated refugee journey delivered in the Whitlam Institute within Western Sydney University from 24 July - 11 August 2023. It aims to raise awareness about human rights and celebrate the contributions refugees make in our local community.
Professional development tours are delivered for groups and individuals who wish to learn more about the refugee experience and how they can better support new arrivals in their respective fields.
Tours are delivered by guides from a range of refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds with 'live experiences'. Through the tour you’ll experience the journey of a refugee and gain a better understanding of the challenges they face both as they are looking for safety, and after arriving in Australia.
Intended Outcome: Gain an understanding of the lived experience and journey of refugees through storytelling and practical simulations.
The tour will help you:
- Understand how the refugee experience can impact well-being.
- Develop your understanding of risk factors for this group.
- Develop strategies to improve access and your ability to engage effectively with people from a refugee background.
- This event supports BUILD Values of Global Citizenship, Intercultural Competency, Diversity and Inclusion; and Social and Environmental Sustainability.
