Let's talk mental health
Mental Health Month’s coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the conversation. We spoke to students about their experiences dealing with mental health challenges and why there’s nothing wrong with getting help if you need it.
You aren’t alone
Looming due dates, regular assignments and balancing study, work, and other life commitments can be pretty stressful. It might not come as a surprise to learn that mental illness is at its highest amongst people aged 18 to 25.
"Learning that other people felt this way made getting through uni so much easier. I found I was convincing myself that reaching out was terrifying and not worth it. I ended up having this one conversation with a classmate about how anxious I was over this assignment, and he agreed. It felt so good to know I wasn't alone." – Joseph, a first year student.
Perhaps you’ve heard from friends that they’re experiencing stress or anxiety due to studies or work, or both. Sometimes, all you need is to be reminded that you are not alone. Remember to be kind to yourself, particularly during the final assessment period, and know that your peers will probably understand how you're feeling.
Reach out
While everyone’s experience is different, a common theme emerged among the students we spoke to; conversations around mental health were pivotal in getting students support when they needed it most.
"Sometimes my anxiety becomes so paralysing that I just don't have the energy to start my assignments, and then I get anxious about falling behind. I struggled with this until I realised that UTS could organise accommodations that helped me feel more in control. I now feel a lot better when assignment season hits." – Jenna, a third-year student.
Talk to the people around you about your feelings and check in with your friends to see how they’re doing.
And remember, talking about your wellbeing isn't just crucial during mental health month – it's a lifelong conversation.
