Brennan Program Justice Talks 2023 #1
The Highest Court screening and student discussion
In this screening event, UTS Law and Brennan students are invited to learn about the complex workings of Australia's High Court, specifically the Brennan Court. Brennan students will have the opportunity to watch Sir Gerard Brennan's decision making processes, for whom the Brennan Justice and Leadership Program was named after. Students will also learn how other High Court Justice members approach the topic of justice in Australia. Students with an interest in retro or vintage TV documentary will appreciate this screening.
After the screening there will be a film discussion with your Brennan LSS Co-Director and guest to be confirmed, facilitated by academic Brennan Co-Director Renata Grossi.
Join us for an evening of reflection and conversation about the complex and dedicated role of a Judge in Australia's High Court. For students attending the Brennan Program Justice Talks 2023 #2 - The Honourable Justice Jacqueline Gleeson SC, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the High Court of Australia prior to the event.
About the film:
"The year is 1998 and having gained historic access, The Highest Court, reveals the characters and drama of the High Court of Australia, the pinnacle of legal and constitutional processes in Australia.
The role of the Court is explored as the film follows the handing down of two historic constitutional judgments Kruger and Ha and the appointment of two new Justices — Hayne and Callinan.
For the first time cases have been filmed as they actually happen in the Court culminating with the landmark Hindmarsh Island Bridge challenge.
For the first time cameras move into the Court and reveal the work of the seven Justices. Never before has the High Court of Australia, or any major political institution of this significance in Australia, given such access to a documentary film crew.
1998 was a period of great change for the Court. Two vital constitutional judgments are handed down Kruger v The Commonwealth — the tragic ‘Stolen Generations’ case; and Ha v NSW — the State Excise case which stopped the collection of hundreds of millions of dollars of state duties."
