Targeted at those involved in the practice of academic work and supporting quality learning, this course addresses the complexities of higher education, shaped by internationalisation, technological progress, and the dual demands of preparing students for employment and societal contribution. In this course you will critically reflect on your teaching philosophy, your sense of professional agency and align your practice with contemporary educational research, integrating theoretical insights with practical teaching strategies to foster a scholarly approach to pedagogy. You will gain a deeper understanding of learning theories, curriculum design, and evidence-based teaching methods. Additionally, you will develop skills to adapt to diverse educational settings, enhance student engagement, and demonstrate your teaching effectiveness. Learning occurs through a blend of self-inquiry, peer collaboration, and engagement with students and professionals, ensuring a dynamic and reflective educational experience.
This course invites university academics to examine their purpose, values and approaches to teaching and learning, enhance their practice as well as develop their careers. It balances theory from key research in learning and curriculum, with practical skills and strategies. Through a practice based, dialogic approach participants engage in critical and self-directed inquiry as well as work collaboratively with colleagues, course teams, students, and professional practitioners to enable them to develop their professional judgment and scholarly teaching repertoire.

The aim of the course is to enable participants to develop a scholarly framework and a robust teaching repertoire. It is tailored to their unique teaching and learning environments to enhance student learning experiences, advance their academic career and evidence their impact.
This course is offered by the Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Unit through the School of International Studies and Education in FASS.

Course duration
The course is a part time program. It is undertaken within eight short teaching Sessions with each Session spanning six weeks. The course can be completed in one year, with a maximum completion time of two years.
On campus - WeeklyAdmission requirements
To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.
Applicants must have the following:
- Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent AND Be actively engaged in teaching activities at UTS (as a full-time or fractional higher education academic, casual academic, or enrolled in a UTS higher research degree AND teaching at UTS)
Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application
Evidence of eligibility is demonstrated through submission of one of the following:
- A copy of UTS fixed-term, continuing or casual contract
- Copies of employment timesheets
- A letter from UTS Human Resources confirming current employment
AND applicants enrolled in a UTS higher research degree must submit:
- A support letter from their principal supervisor on official UTS letterhead
Upon meeting the selection criteria and being offered and accepting admission into the course, participants will be exempt from paying course fees through sponsorship by the University.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL iBT: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

International studentsVisa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.
