Commonwealth Supported Places

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) within this course are competitive and allocated on merit. To be considered for a CSP, applicants must:

  • Indicate their interest in a CSP on their application.
  • Complete the compulsory personal statement.
  • Apply on time in line with CSP deadlines (it is recommended applicants apply early as applications are assessed progressively).

This course is designed for graduates seeking to qualify as primary school teachers in NSW. It is ideal for those with relevant undergraduate degrees, and it can be completed in two years.

It takes a comprehensive approach to teaching, blending educational theory with practical decision-making. Importantly, it stands out for its focus on inclusive education, digital learning, Indigenous Australian perspectives, and data-driven research and evaluation.

You will gain expertise in English, Mathematics, Creative Arts, HSIE, STEM, and PDHPE, alongside effective teaching methods.

Learning involves a mix of campus-based studies and 60 days of field-based professional teaching experiences, ensuring you are well-prepared for the classroom environment.

This course is a NSW primary school teaching preparation course and adheres to the subject content knowledge prerequisites as stipulated by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). It is suitable for students about to graduate with a bachelor's degree and for graduates who are changing careers and want a teaching qualification. It includes an intensive professional experience program where students spend 60 days in practical experience teaching, and offers extensive, structured and closely supported experiences of primary school teaching in different settings.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

Applicants must have the following:

  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree, master's degree or doctorate, or overseas equivalent AND A minimum of 1 year full-time, or equivalent part-time, study (normally 8 units of study) that is relevant to one or more Key Learning Areas of the primary school curriculum (this is a prerequisite requirement from the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) AND Motivation and suitability for teaching as outlined by NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL)

Motivation and suitability for teaching is demonstrated through a personal statement outlining interest in and understanding of the course.

Students who have studied overseas may be required to meet additional requirements set by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) in order to qualify as teachers in NSW.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 7.5 overall, with a minimum of 8.0 in both the speaking and listening modules, and a reading and writing score of 7.0; or TOEFL iBT: 102-109 overall, a listening score of 28, a speaking score of 26, a reading score of 24 and a writing score of 27; or PTE: 73-78 overall with a 79 in both the speaking and listening, and a reading and writing score of 65; or C1A/C2P: 191-199 overall with 200 in both the speaking and listening, and a reading and writing score of 185.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Professional recognition

This course is accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) as a recognised primary school teaching qualification. To gain employment as a teacher in NSW schools, graduands must meet the requirements of the NESA, including language proficiency.
