Thinking of applying for joint external funding? The KTP program can support you through the process.

When seeking external funding, collaboration can be instrumental to securing the income you need. Working with different researchers — and even across different industries — will enrich your application, expand the versatility of your research, and therefore broaden your eligibility for opportunities. The KTP program offers a variety of resources to support you along the way.

Here are our top tips for submitting an application:

  • Brainstorm ideas for funding early to make the most of your time. There is often a long wait period to secure your research income.
  • Seek early feedback from peers and professional staff to get the best out of your application.
  • Be engaging. Why is your application important? Articulate the value of your work so it’s clear and direct for the funder to understand.
  • Where will your research go? Think strategically about your intended outcomes so funders can understand what they’re supporting.

Online resources for UTS academics

  • Our good proposal template can be useful to help put your ideas on paper.
  • The resources on Staff Connect provide guidance on funding for your research — including industry engagement.
  • ResHub provides online training and information about funding opportunities.
  • Research Professional is a multi-discipline database of Australian and overseas funding. All UTS staff can search for grants, awards, fellowships, and other opportunities. You can also set up personalised searches and alerts to stay informed of new opportunities.
  • Dimensions is an online platform to help you identify collaborators or competitors, funders and funding trends, and new sources of research funding.
  • Sign up for the Research Opportunities Newsletter to stay across the latest news, training and funding opportunities from the UTS Research Office.
  • Contact Maggie Wang (International Research Grant Manager) for advice and support relating to external grant opportunities.
  • Reach out to your Faculty Research Engagement Managers (FREM). The table below provides contact details for each UTS faculty.

Our collaborative research is hugely beneficial. We may not have much facility to expand our research methodology at home — but, being here, we can expand and explore. We can heighten the impact of the papers we produce and give more visibility to our work. It's been an amazing experience.
