Topic: The Power of Love: Emotional Support and Financial Hardship
Speaker: Da Ke, University of South Carolina
Abstract: Using microdata from two complementary U.S. household surveys, I document that individuals with strong emotional support from family and friends are less likely to experience financial hardship. This pattern is stronger for women as well as for those prone to anxiety and depression. I further show that better mental health accounts for a substantial portion of the buffering effect of emotional support. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of the psychological dimension of social networks in shaping household financial outcomes.
