Topic
Best practices in survey design: Measuring inflation expectations and financial time horizons.
abstract
Economists are increasingly using large national household surveys to assess how people make financial decisions. Because most economists do not have training in survey design, economic survey questions do not always follow best practices in survey design, undermining the quality of people’s responses. In this talk, I will discuss best practices in survey design, and my experience in evaluating and improving survey questions about inflation expectations, which informed the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Expectations. I will also show data from a new project in which we aimed to evaluate and improve questions about financial planning horizons, or the time period people have in mind when making financial decisions. These projects reflect collaborations with economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and at the Securities and Exchange Commission.
