The Accounting Department’s education pathways are well informed by industry best practices and the latest financial and management accounting research. Subjects offered by the Department focus on work-integrated learning by emphasising the development of technical and professional skills.

The Department has connections with industry that provide real-life examples and practical case studies.

The Department’s Innovative teaching approaches using cutting edge learning technologies, which ensures students are best prepared for the challenging and changing world of business.

We offer a range of practical and professionally relevant undergraduate and postgraduate courses. These courses are recognised by professional bodies including the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ), CPA Australia and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). Courses provide foundational knowledge and further development of the skills needed by the modern business professional.

The Accounting Department supports student learning outcomes through the design of educational programs that integrate the industry best practices and recent advancements in financial and management accounting research into the curriculum. Our curriculum prioritises work-integrated learning opportunities which place a strong emphasis on cultivating both work-ready technical and professional skills.

Students benefit from exposure to industry professionals through our department's extensive network, gaining invaluable insights from real-life examples and practical case studies. Our commitment to innovation is reflected in our teaching methods, which leverage cutting-edge learning technologies to foster a deeper understanding of accounting concepts to equip students with the knowledge needed to excel in the dynamic and demanding landscape of the business world.

The courses offered include a range of practical and professionally relevant undergraduate and postgraduate courses which are accredited with the professional bodies including as Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ), CPA Australia, and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). These courses not only provide a solid foundation of knowledge but also foster the ongoing development of skills essential for the modern business professional.

The unique identity of Accounting at UTS 

The Accounting Department’s unique qualities promote significant value for our students. Accounting was formed in 1977 to deliver excellence in education and currently has over 60 dedicated teaching staff supporting courses and a lifetime of learning approach.

The department's success is evident through its Academic groups' many achievements. These were recently underpinned by;

  1. Our very own distinguished Professor Stephen Taylor was inducted into the Australian Accounting Hall of Fame for his longstanding contributions to accounting research, education and standards setting.
  2. Our specialised Bachelor of Accounting program is headed up by Michelle Cook, who was recently honoured with the prestigious 2022 Vice-Chancellor's Professional Staff Excellence Award and the Business School’s 2023 Professional Excellence Award.

Accounting Department subjects integrate theory, case studies, and practical experience to provide an excellent platform for me to develop and apply my knowledge of the industry. In combination with engaging classes and ample learning support, the teaching staff provide excellent educational resources that have made me feel work-ready and confident in pursuing my chosen career path.

The Department offers flexible study options with majors and sub-majors tailored to the career objectives of the learner.

The Department leads the delivery of Accounting and Business Data Analytics majors in the Bachelor of Business undergraduate degree.

At postgraduate level, we deliver the Master of Professional Accounting and the Master of Business Analytics, as well as a PhD program in Accounting.
