The Indigenous Teaching and Learning Committee is a specialist consultative forum providing strategic advice and guidance on cross-university Indigenous teaching and learning matters. The committee reports to the Vice-Chancellor’s Indigenous Strategies Committee.

Terms of reference

The Indigenous Teaching and Learning Committee provides advice and makes recommendations on the development, implementation, quality assurance and monitoring of cross-university Indigenous teaching and learning strategies, processes and initiatives. It assists the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) with achieving Indigenous education commitments in the Indigenous Policy and Indigenous Education and Research Strategy 2019–2023.

The committee in particular:

  1. provides advice and makes recommendations on cross-university Indigenous teaching and learning matters, including their impact on UTS policies, strategies, procedures and guidelines
  2. considers and makes recommendations regarding the development and expansion of Indigenous teaching and learning strategy, as aligned with broader UTS teaching and learning strategies and initiatives (such as postgraduate.futures, enterprise learning, and microcredentials/other short forms of learning)
  3. plays a leading role in the oversight, implementation and monitoring of the Indigenous Graduate Attribute (IGA), by:
    1. providing advice and recommendations on university-wide protocols and procedures for the development and approval of Indigenous subjects and content
    2. recommending mechanisms to ensure the centrality of Indigenous consultation, participation and endorsement throughout the faculty IGA implementation process
    3. providing specialist academic advice on ensuring standardisation of the IGA across faculties, and sharing examples of best practice, and
    4. monitoring progression and quality of the IGA through consideration of regular (at least annual) IGA performance reports
    5. making recommendations on and contributing to the development of strategies to ensure cultural safety in the teaching and learning environment (primarily in relation to Indigenous staff and students), including initiatives to increase the cultural capacity of non-Indigenous academic staff delivering Indigenous content
    6. monitoring Indigenous student success, retention and completion trends, and makes recommendations on strategies to promote academic success and achieve parity of outcomes with non-Indigenous students
    7. making recommendations in relation to enhancing and improving the Indigenous student experience, including the non-Indigenous student experience in the context of Indigenous teaching and learning
    8. making recommendations on a range of measures to ensure the quality of Indigenous teaching and learning generally
    9. providing advice or action as appropriate on any relevant matters referred to it by the Vice-Chancellor’s Indigenous Strategies Committee.

Procedural matters

Term of office

The term of office for a member of the Indigenous Teaching and Learning Committee, other than an ex-officio member, will be 2 years for staff and one year for students.

Review of membership

The composition and membership of the Indigenous Teaching and Learning Committee will be reviewed periodically by the Chair in accordance with the procedures approved by the Vice-Chancellor’s Indigenous Strategies Committee and amended from time to time.

Quorum

The quorum shall be one-half of the current members of the committee, if one-half is not a whole number, the next higher whole number shall be used.

Vacant positions on the committee do not count toward the total membership of which one-half is required to reach a quorum.

Number of meetings

The Indigenous Teaching and Learning Committee meets at least 4 times a year.
