Jane Maguire in the Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame

Professor Jane Maguire will be inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau (STTI) International Honor Society of Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame at Sigma’s 34th International Nursing Research Congress in July 2023.

Professor Maguire is recognised internationally as a leading stroke genetics nurse researcher.

She is the Australian lead for the international Genetics of Stroke Functional Outcome network, which investigates the biological mechanisms of stroke recovery using genome-wide association studies. Professor Maguire also leads the drive to increase genomic literacy in the nursing profession, through the initiation of genomic education strategies and continuing professional education for nurses in Australia and internationally.

Professor Maguire has been awarded over $3.4 million in grants and has an h-index of 32 and i10 index of 60, published over 136 peer-reviewed research papers in high-impact journals, including Nature Genetics, Stroke, Neurology Genetics, and Radiology. She reviews articles for more than a dozen journals and has 4 book Chapter publications.

“My passion for stroke genetic research began through seeing both my uncle and grandmother experience the devastating impacts of a stroke on function and cognition.

These impacts had such a profound effect on daily ordinary tasks and overall quality of life that I wanted to understand how we could really make a difference for stroke survivors by understanding the biological mechanisms of risk and recovery,” says Professor Maguire.  

“Over the years, the field of genomics has grown exponentially, and I became acutely aware that nurses were not being taught about genomic evidence.

In order to continue to be evidence based in practice, they needed to know more and about where this science was being implemented in clinical care.”

Being given this award makes me feel deeply grateful. To be included in the Hall of Fame with 22 other amazing nurses is truly the highlight of my career, and to be recognized in this way, by the global nursing profession and given this highly prestigious public acknowledgement by my peers is incredible.

The STTI Honor Society of Nursing will induct Jane and the other 22 world-renowned nurse researchers – representing Australia, England, Hong Kong, Italy, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, and the United States – into the Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame during the organisation’s 34th International Nursing Research Congress in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in July.

This year marks the 14th presentation of the prestigious Hall of Fame honour. The 2023 inductees will join 270 previously inducted nurse researchers who have achieved significant and sustained national or international recognition and whose research has improved the profession of nursing and the people it serves.
