Meet Jack Computer Science IDeA Cadetship Student

An unexpected comment from Jack’s lecturer prompted him to apply for the IDeA cadetship program. Now Jack’s studying and gaining experience in the industry, all while getting paid.

Jack, a second year Computing Science student, learnt about the Industry Degree Academy (IDeA) cadetship from his lecturer. The program is designed to provide a mix of both study and real-world employment. Spanning three years, students are given the opportunity to work with industry partners to create meaningful connections and gain practical experience.

“My friend and I both decided to apply for the cadetship through WiseTech Global, which has partnered with UTS. We both got the call that we were accepted on the same day.”

For some students, the IDeA cadetship was unnerving. Managing both work and study can be difficult, but the IDeA cadetship offers flexibility.

“A lot of university students take on a full-load university degree and work a part-time job on top of that, but they don’t get any hands-on experience in the industry they are studying in. The IDeA cadetship is designed to give you experience in your chosen field. It gives you a massive head start.”

Diving into the industry

Jack has found the experience incredibly rewarding. “All new starters go through rotations with the company. It really allows you to get a taste of what programming languages you like. My first rotation was working with the WiseTech warehousing team, where we partnered with clients like FedEx and DHL.”

And the work-life balance? “It’s very flexible. A lot of people do an 8-4pm or 7-3pm shift, depending on what works best for you. For example, some people want a longer lunch so they can go to the gym or play badminton with other team members. To WiseTech you are not just a number. You’re joining a team.”

Taking charge of your future

The decision to attend UTS was an easy one. "UTS offers the most-up to date, relevant subjects. For example, they are offering Artificial Intelligence (AI) subjects, which I think is cool because it's a relatively new thing."

Looking forward, Jack enjoys a rare sense of certainty. “I’m so happy to continue to pursue my career at WiseTech. It’s not just an internship, it’s a job. At the end of my degree, I’m employed.”
