Innovation and social good on display at the FEIT Capstone Showcase
The FEIT Capstone Showcase was held on 21 May to display the research projects of final year engineering students. A wide range of projects were showcased to members of the public, industry and the UTS community.
Awards were presented to recognise outstanding research projects that demonstrated innovation, social impact, potential for commercialisation, excellence in design and build, professional excellence, overall quality and presentation.
Civil engineering student Amelia Welsh was awarded the ‘Best Poster’ Award and the ‘Engineering and IT for Good’ Award at the showcase. Amelia's research project explored the housing system in Australia and alternative frameworks for the purpose of addressing housing affordability challenges. The supervisors of the capstone project were Dr Cecilia Gravina da Rocha and Dr Kasun De Silva Wijayaratna.
The school congratulates all students who showcased their projects, which marks a key milestone in the Bachelor degree program. The capstone project is a significant piece of engineering work by final year undergraduates. Students present their innovative projects to attendees, highlighting their research achievements and engineering expertise. Projects were judged by academic staff and members of industry.

Short Summary of Capstone Project
Unlocking Affordable Housing: Innovations for Australia
Access to affordable and safe housing in Australia is an ever-growing scarcity. Amelia’s Capstone Research project set out to uncover Australia’s current rental housing frameworks. The research project investigated the concept of non-market housing from a social enterprise perspective using models that have been successful in other parts of the world. The project explored potential innovative approaches that can be adopted by private and non-for-profit sectors, reducing the reliance on government-led initiatives.
