About the work

Painting Town 23 was shot with a slow-motion video camera to capture the turbulence of paint poured onto architectural models.

Video reveals the fascinating wet stage of painterly production which is lost when viewing a painting in a gallery, since most paintings must be dry or 'cured' before they can be hung on a wall.

As such paint is disclosed as a substance powered by an internal drive to move anywhere and everywhere, to take any form, to colour a city, to make entire cities a canvas for colour.

About the artist

Dr Mark Titmarsh is a lecturer at the UTS School of Design, as well as a visual artist working in painting, video, text and design. 

Painting Town 23 (2023) is on display from 20 April to 4 May 2023.
