Helping to address the needs of construction project managers and cost management professionals in the 5D BIM professional sphere.

5D BIM construction visualisation

The UTS 5D BIM Research Lab is a collaborative initiative between industry and academia to help address the needs of construction project managers involved in the delivery of projects in understanding the implications of their methodology upon cost project cost management professionals in the 5D BIM professional sphere.

It will cover the needs of both Client Side Project Managers and Quantity Surveyors and Contractor Side Project Managers, Estimators and Cost Planners.

A first for Australia

The Lab is the first of its type in Australia. It builds on the nationally acclaimed project cost management stream in the UTS Bachelor of Construction Project Management (BCPM), where 5D BIM and leading edge digital technologies are deeply imbedded.

The key objectives are:

  • to improve cost management education, knowledge and competency in the construction industry,
  • to address industry issues in relation to effective implementation and use of 5D BIM and allied digital technologies, and
  • to promote project cost management as a professional career path.

Multi-purpose

The lab incorporates a high-tech 5D BIM computing lab that will provide a central hub for:

  • applied research,
  • student education,
  • industry workshops,
  • training sessions and seminars dedicated to the project cost management field.

Developing education

The lab will provide an important catalyst for the further development of 5D BIM teaching and learning in the BCPM course, student understanding of how 5D BIM is currently being used, how this use might (or should) evolve in the future and to prepare our graduates for this ever-evolving digital technology sphere.

This education will extend to industry practitioners in the form of workshops, training and seminars by leading 5D BIM proponents.

BIM Short Course

Facilitating research

Research at the lab will focus on working closely with industry practitioners, firms and professional associations to examine 5D BIM implementation issues currently facing project managers and project cost management professionals and how these issues can be best addressed. This will include research into:

  • the specific needs of project cost managers in terms of BIM models and allied software/technologies,
  • what the key issues/problems are and what is needed to help address these issues/problems,
  • how project managers and cost professionals can best utilise rapidly evolving technologies and information systems such as artificial intelligence, automation, augmented reality and big data.
