The Collective for Midwifery, Child and Family Health acknowledges the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation, upon whose ancestral lands UTS stands. We pay our respects to Elders both past, present, and emerging, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for this land.
Birthing on Country
We also acknowledge the meaning and significance of Birthing on Country for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women and recognise that Birthing on Country occurred for many thousands of years before women were removed to birth in institutional settings. We acknowledge the deep hurt and damage that has resulted from the wrongful usurping of the traditional birthing practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. We recognise the harmful impact that this history has on freedom of choice, culture and families and understand that the impact of colonialisation is ongoing to this day.
We express our commitment to be part of the changes required in the Australian healthcare system to adequately support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women and their families during the significant cultural and life event of childbearing.
We recognise the importance of the preservation and upholding of cultural values during pregnancy, birth and mothering. We will unreservedly advocate for maternity services that address the cultural, spiritual, social, emotional, and physical needs of all women.
We affirm to reflect upon and learn from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their families so that we may understand the real-world impact of Australian history and support women in the reclaiming of what was taken from them.
