Rule of Thumb is a satirical video that was developed as a self-directed Honours project.

Playing upon contemporary obsessions with self-improvement and success, Rule of Thumb is a smartphone and tablet app that critiques the social effects of these technologies and their pervasive influence on our daily lives. Encouraging the user to set goals and compete in game like, thumb fitness challenges, Rule of Thumb will train you to ‘swipe faster and scroll longer’. Film, as opposed to an app prototype, enhances the satirical tone of voice while increasing shareability. Combined with a Kickstarter campaign, Rule of Thumb aims at cultural criticism, seeking to make users aware of, and curb, their device dependence.
