Jinni Yan
You need more than academic knowledge to succeed in your career.
My name is Jinni, and I’m studying a PhD in Clinical Biochemistry and Toxicology at UTS. When I finished high school, I went straight to university and studied a Bachelor of Forensic Science (Honours) at UTS. I first discovered my passion for forensic science on a work experience placement in year 10 at the NSW Forensic and Analytical Science Service.
Once I completed honours, I knew I wanted to continue research with a PhD degree. I had an excellent experience working on my honours project, and my supervisor offered me an exciting PhD project. My PhD project works on the developing an untargeted metabolomics analysis method for investigating potential cerebrospinal fluid markers for patients with neuroinflammation conditions using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry.
One thing I wish someone told me when I was in year 12 was how valuable experience is when looking for work when you’re looking for a new job. Employers are looking for candidates with not just a bachelor’s degree but also with substantial experience. You need more than academic knowledge to succeed in your career.
The best thing about university life is getting involved with student societies and volunteering organisations. I was involved with UTS The Big Lift – a student-run volunteering organisation that works closely with communities in need across regional Australia.
I’m personally responding to the COVID-19 situation quite well by setting goals for myself. I’ve set personal goals for each week and make use of a calendar to keep on track with my studies. I communicate with my supervisors regularly by email and online meetings.
A word of advice I would share with students who are now studying online is to treat your online learning as though you are still attending class on campus. Keep to a schedule and don’t slack off just because you’re at home. I would also recommend keeping in contact with your teachers, have a comfortable study environment and take regular breaks.
While isolating at home, I’ve had more time to do the things I enjoy. Examples include exercising, gardening, reading and watching Netflix.
