There are several types of higher degree research qualifications. Compare and decide which one is right for you.
Can I progress from a graduate diploma to a Masters?
It depends on which course you are studying. If it’s a business faculty course, the requirement is to have less than 25% fails.
How do I know if I am eligible?
The general requirement for admission to postgraduate coursework study at UTS is an Australian bachelor's degree or overseas equivalent.
However, for some courses other qualifications and experience may be considered, including:
- graduate certificates, graduate diplomas or a TAFE diploma
- substantial work experience, substantiated with letters from employers
Applicants must also meet the English language proficiency requirements to be eligible for an offer to study at UTS.

Do I need a bachelor's degree?
The traditional path to postgraduate study is via a completed bachelor's degree, but if you have other qualifications and professional experience (around 8 years) you may be eligible to enter a Graduate Certificate.
A Graduate Certificates sets you on the path to postgraduate study, and you finish with a respected qualification after only 4 subjects.
Graduate Certificates also make up the first 4 subjects of a master's degree, so if you successfully finish this, you may be able to go straight on to complete the master's degree.
What's the difference between research and coursework?
Postgraduate coursework involves studying a series of subjects to update your existing skills or knowledge in a particular area and requires completion of core units and electives. You'll be required to attend lectures, classes, seminars, or laboratory sessions and complete assignments and exams.
Many of our courses are offered with options such as day and evening classes, block classes, part-time course loads and intensive study modes to accommodate your work life. Assessment tasks for many subjects are tailored to your place of work to help you apply your learning and gain confidence as you develop new skills.
Research degrees require you to undertake a research project that contributes to the field in which you study. For more information on research degrees at UTS, visit UTS research degrees.

How much will it cost?
Postgraduate study is a big investment in your future, not just financially, but in time as well. Tuition fees are determined by its credit points and course in which you are enrolled and the credit point value of the subjects.
To calculate an approximate course fee, multiply the total credit points for your course by the fee per credit point. You can calculate your course fees using the UTS Course Fee Calculator.
Is there a student loan system for postgraduate students?
Yes. You may qualify for FEE HELP, a government loan scheme for Australian students. It allows you to defer some or all of your fees depending on your income. You repay the loan through your tax, so the amount you pay per year depends on how much you earn.
Alternatively, if what you are studying is directly related to your current job and you pay your fees up front, you may also be able to claim your fees and other study related expenses as a tax deduction. See the ATO website for more details.
Can I study part time?
Most postgraduate courses are available full time or part time. Majority of local students choose to study part time, at night, or sometimes at weekend classes if offered. Class times are designed for busy professionals, sometimes with day or evening options for classes. Classes generally take take place in the City campus, just minutes walk from Central Station. Find out if part-time study options are available in your course area of interest.
You can change the number of credit points you take per session at the beginning of each session. It is recommended that full time students take 24 credits per session and part time students take less than 18 credits per session.
If you're an international student, you must study full time.
How much time should I dedicate to study?
In addition to contact class time which can be calculated using the timetable planner, you will probably spend double that in individual or group study and project work. Our buildings are open 24/7, with award-winning spaces that makes this much easier to manage.

It is recommended that full time students take 24 credits per session and part time students take less than 18 credits per session.
Do I receive recognition of prior learning?
All applicants are assessed individually based on relevant tertiary qualifications and/or evidence of learning outcomes demonstrated through appropriate work experience. If you have a recent tertiary qualification in IT, engineering, or a related field, you may be eligible for up to 24 credit points that cover the basics you already know. Unfortunately credit cannot be applied to combined degrees.

How are applications assessed?
Each application is assessed individually. Your Bachelor Degree, as well as work experience, are taken into consideration including other admission requirements. If in doubt, attach a current CV and personal statement with your application.
What is the deadline for my scholarship application?
You don’t need to apply for a scholarship unless it's for a 'Full Tuition Fee Scholarship'. All submitted applications are assessed for a scholarship, depending on if the applicant is eligible.
How can I apply?
Domestic students
Domestic students can apply to study postgraduate coursework at UTS online via the UTS Online Application System.
Direct applicants should submit any additional required documents with their application form. All other applicants should submit additional material as indicated for each course.
International students

When will I receive my offer?
If you are successful, you should receive your offer within 1-2 weeks from the date of submission.
