While Melissa has always been driven by her passion for justice and serving others, it is the excellent start she had at UTS that she attributes to her positive career life which has seen her take on legal roles at the ABC, Flying Bark Productions and ViacomCBS.
“UTS provided an excellent foundation for my legal career as my degree fostered skills in problem solving, communication, analytical thinking and collaboration with other legal minds.”
“Studying both Journalism and Law nurtured creativity in approaching both disciplines and helped me to learn how to manage my time effectively.”
As a prospective student, Melissa was drawn to the practical focus of the degree as well as the dynamic and active campus life.
“At the UTS Open Day, my conversations with current law students resonated with me and I had a strong sense that I would be part of a supportive and collaborative faculty…I already knew then that I would thoroughly enjoy my student experience.”
Melissa’s experience measured up to her expectations, and she counts her involvement as founder and president of the UTS Amnesty International Society as a highlight.
Upon finishing her Bachelor of Laws, Melissa went on to complete the UTS Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice, the practical legal training (PLT) component required to gain admission as a legal practitioner. She says the PLT helped her strengthen her “advocacy, drafting and negotiating skills, providing valuable insight into legal practice”.
These skills continue to be useful, especially in her current role where she is responsible for drafting and negotiating contracts across multiple business units, and engaging in an array of corporate governance and intellectual property matters.
For those who are considering following a similar path, Melissa believes that being tenacious and agile is key.
“Hard work at university and beyond is essential, but so is collaboration, networking and building diversity and balance around your academic life through involvement in different activities.”
“Get involved in campus, try new things and don’t be afraid to make mistakes,” Melissa recommends.
