Nicholas Commins
UTS is practical, and having a course that actually teaches you the how and why is second to none
Nicholas Commins studied the JD at UTS and then went on to graduate from the UTS Practical Legal Training Program in 2016. He’s now an Associate Lawyer and enjoying putting his academic study into practice in commercial law:
“My focus is private law - contracts, commercial, corporations, land and property and intellectual property. This includes everything from business start-ups, to commercial banking and finance, ASX listings, foreign investment, and charities. I am a data law and privacy specialist and I am a member of the NSW Law Society’s Data Law and Privacy Committee.”
Nicholas credits his ability to deal with the fast-paced and ever-changing nature of the role to his experience studying the PLT at UTS:
“The PLT course prepared me for commercial transactions and the everchanging nature of commercial dealings. It taught me the skills needed to be ready, fast and effective, as well as how to maintain files properly.”
Nicholas says he was impressed with the practical approach to teaching throughout his JD and this led him to continue with PLT at UTS:
“The UTS program has a sterling reputation – it’s taught by real practitioners with no hand waving of the important stuff. The academics were excellent and always offered immediate and unblemished feedback.”
With several years of industry experience under his belt, Nicholas has exciting plans for the future, including further study:
“I plan on building a few more specialties and perhaps adding some accreditations like the UTS Graduate Certificate in Trade Mark Law and Practice. I am also working on a practice in assisting start-ups and game developers to build their businesses and launch products. I work with the odd eSports athlete and team and I am keen to see if this industry grows to a point where lawyers play an important role just like in traditional sports.”
