With a Bachelor of Laws and several years as a successful commercial lawyer under her belt, Sarah Romanous returned to UTS to further her knowledge with a Master of Laws majoring in Intellectual Property.
“I had been practising law for a few years, and was starting to practise in the commercialisation of intellectual property, which was a new area for me. I decided that a proper foundation through a postgraduate course would fast track my understanding.”
When contemplating her return to study, Sarah says it was her experience studying undergraduate law at UTS, as well as the flexible study options for postgrad students, that assured her UTS was the right decision.
“I previously studied the Bachelor of Laws at UTS and loved my experience. The learning style was really interactive and practical and had prepared me well for the workforce, so I had no doubts that I wanted to continue my studies at UTS. I also found the mix of online and on-campus offerings meant I could be flexible with my attendance, which is really helpful when you work full time while studying. Plus the alumni discount is also a really good incentive financially.”
While the return to study was challenging, Sarah says staying organised and knowing what time management strategies worked best for her were important for getting the most out of the course.
“When managing work, life and study, I found a colour coded calendar with blocked out periods for study and assignments worked really well. You really do need to be organised, and to set aside time to study, so that it doesn’t interfere with other areas of your life and so you stay on top of the course work and assignments.”
The Master of Laws gave Sarah the option to choose electives relevant to her current work in the industry, with one of her favourite subjects being Media and Entertainment Law and Regulation.
“It was a very engaging and interactive subject, with weekly discussions on interesting and relevant topics like freedom of speech, defamation and the regulation of the social media. I would definitely recommend it to anyone studying the Master of Laws. ”
Sarah currently works as a Senior Associate at HWL Ebsworth Lawyers in the Corporate and Commercial Practice Group, where she works on Federal Government commercial law matters, including procurement and contracting, major projects, information technology and general advisory work.
