Undergraduate nursing
Study modes
Classes usually run over each of the Autumn and Spring sessions. These may be held over four to five days each week, with two to eight hours of classes or lectures each day.
Practical learning
Nursing Practice
Some subjects include nursing practice in hospitals or health facilities.
Important points about Nursing Practice:
- Attendance is mandatory
- Shifts will be in a five-day per week block pattern
- You’ll be put on an AM or PM shift (generally 7 am to 3.30 pm or 1.30 pm to 10 pm)
Please note: Some travelling will be involved. We will try to place you close to home however this is not always possible.
Self-directed study
You will need to allow time for self-directed study and assignment preparation in addition to hours on campus and on nursing practice.
- As a general rule, for every hour of face-to-face teaching, you should allow one to two hours of self-directed study
- Full time students should expect to spend 30-40 hours each week in lectures, tutorials, nursing laboratories, nursing practice, self-directed study and preparing assignments
Undergraduate midwifery
Study modes
Full time students typically undertake four subjects each of the Autumn and Spring sessions. Classes may be held over four to five days each week, with two to eight hours of classes or lectures each day.
Practical learning
Midwifery Practice
- You’ll be allocated to either one hospital or area health service
- Attendance is mandatory
- You’ll be put on an AM or PM shift
- You’ll either be on a one-day per week pattern or block pattern (up to five shifts in one week)
- There may be the possibility of some on-call work
- There is an optional rural placement in the third year

Self-directed study
In addition to hours on campus and on midwifery practice, you need to allow time for self-directed study and assignment preparation.

Undergraduate Sport and exercise management and Sport and exercise science
Study modes
Full time students typically undertake four subjects in each of the Autumn and Spring sessions. Classes may be held over three to five days each week, with two to eight hours of classes or lectures each day.
Some subjects include laboratory-based content, and you are required to observe the laboratory rules as outlined by the academic staff or technical staff.
You need to allow time for self-directed study and assignment preparation in addition to hours on campus.
- As a general rule, for every hour of face-to-face teaching, you should allow two hours of self-directed study
- Full time students should expect to spend 30-40 hours each week in lectures, tutorials, laboratories, self-directed study and preparing assignments
Postgraduate courses
Study modes
Full-time students typically undertake four subjects each of the Autumn and Spring sessions. Many students choose part-time study which is typically two subjects per session.
Flexible study
- Many subjects are offered via on-campus study days and online learning
- Each subject often involves three or four full days spread over the session
- Two subjects can be completed in six to eight full days
- These days may be distributed throughout the session, or in clusters of two to four days at a time
